Pizza Hut #26284/#407034: The Sequel (aka The Hut, Outpizza'd!)

This post will look at retail in Southgate, Wayne County, MI.

Previously on Southeast Michigan Retail, we visited a red-roof Pizza Hut that was still in business. If you want the detailed history of said store, visit the linked prequel blog post.

Two years after that visit, SMR finally shows you the current condition of this store, now closed. With the reopening of a lot more of the state of Michigan occurring since I first wrote the previous post, it has become the assumption that there will be no official replacement for this store, and that a delivery/carryout location in Woodhaven has become the de-facto replacement. Red-roof Pizza Huts in Lincoln Park and Clawson, both also owned by Redberry Restaurant Brands (who seems to be the franchise for virtually every Pizza Hut in Metro Detroit) have also been shuttered during the pandemic.

And now let's get to the picture part.

Both of these photos were taken a little over two months after the store's permanent closure. With the road sign painted black, the top part of the roof taken off, and huge "available" advertisements plastered onto the building, it's all-out obvious that pizzas can no longer be bought here.

Strangely, they never even bothered painting the roof in a color other than red, like what's been done at all other shuttered Pizza Huts.

And our interior photo shows that all the 1970's earthtone look is still prevalent post-closure. The orange tile bump-out that used to house the salad bar is especially prominent. They wasted no time in taking everything that can be taken out from the interior.

We finish up this post with a building timeline photo courtesy of the Southgate Historical Foundation, which shows that in 2008, while it was remodeled to add WingStreet menu options, the old roof signage remained up for a little while. The SHF obviously needs to update this image to reflect this becoming a UTBAPH though!

Sorry about the two-month gap between posts, I had so much other stuff to do in that timeframe. But since again, the reopening is happening and there is no longer a lockdown, I should be able to get fresh material for additional posts. Until next time...
